Twenty Three

If my mother was even remotely disappointed, she hid it well. She must’ve despaired inwardly, of course. Heaven knows I did. I mean, a full third of our income had just been yanked from under us. Yet my mother administered a sympathetic hug and pecked me on the cheek as if there was nothing at all to worry about.

“Their loss, honey,” she said, and I almost believed her. For once, I was grateful for my mother’s ability to deceive with so little effort. I needed comfort, after all, not the cold indifference that comes with honesty at a time like that.

Shortly after, I threw the aforementioned fit in my room. It was like the whole world came crashing down on me at once and the injustice of being me was suddenly intolerable. So I did what any self-respecting adolescent would do: I let my inner child take the wheel for a while.

I’m not gonna lie, it wasn’t pretty.

I cried. I growled. I ripped the do not remove under penalty of law tag from the underside of Nicky’s mattress. I brutalized my pillow with closed fists. I squashed a dead roly-poly with my bare fingers.

When I finally ran out of steam, Nicky politely invited me to play cards. We did, and by dinnertime I was more or less feeling my age again.
